Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had abandoned the family, so she was taken care of by her mother, grandma and godparents. While she was a small girl, she was diagnosed with an obsessional disorder and suffered from anxiety due to the word association. Ford became interested in the acting profession during her teens and joined National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just one few weeks, she realized it was not for her. Ford decided to apply for the Central School of Speech and Drama which she was eventually able to get an acceptance on her fourth attempt. One of her classmates included Shaun Dingwall, who would play a part in the role of Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford didn't finish her studies in 1993. But, by 1991, Ford had made her first television appearance in a show called Surgical Spirit. At that point, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate made appearances on television during the Nineties through shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Her regular work in theatre brought her into the Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 Season. Tate began to gain attention due to her stand-up comedy in 1996.
